Are Great Reputations Earned Or Made In Today’s Hair Transplant Field?
It is no secret that some of the biggest names in hair transplant surgery were not earned on the merit of their work, but by the effectiveness of their marketing and PR. Be smart, do your homework and if a clinic or surgeon is more interested in promoting his body of press than his body of work, move on.
Amir Yazdan, MD: When I started doing this, I heard a lot of names in the hair transplant industry and going through it you really start to think like, wow, these guys must be doing really, really great work. As time went on, I started getting some patients who weren't happy. They're coming in for their second, third surgery. I'm seeing some of these names and I'm like, wow, this is the case that they did. It threw me off guard because here I was, being a newcomer in this field thinking, wow, these guys are really, really great. Once I started seeing the work that was done, something's not right. It leads to the marketing. You can market yourself and be anything today.
Amir Yazdan, MD: It just takes Instagram, a little social media and it's that whole fake it til you make it.
Spencer Kobren: Yeah.
Amir Yazdan, MD: There's something wrong with that, because in the middle of that happening, there's a lot of patients being hurt, they're being injured. This is why I really like this organization. This is why I really like being a part of this, because hair transplant has changed. It's going down a bad path, and if it continues a lot of people are going to be hurt before this turns around. Once it turns around, it's going to take time for it to get good again.
Spencer Kobren: It is fucking dark. I've been doing this for over 20 years and I've seen some of the worst of the worst.
Find A Surgeon
The International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons is a consumer organization that selectively screens skilled and ethical hair transplant surgeons. The IAHRS does not offer an open membership policy to doctors practicing hair transplatation, and is the only group that recognizes that all surgeons are not equal in their skill and technique. Its elite membership seeks to represent the best in the discipline, the true leaders in the field of surgical hair restoration.
