According to the ABHRS website "The American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery is internationally recognized as the only 'board certification' focusing on hair restoration surgery for physicians worldwide.” While both the IAHRS and The American Hair Loss Association recognize the tremendous effort the ABHRS and its leadership has put into attempting to create a reasonable standard of care for this unregulated field, being a Diplomate of the ABHRS only signifies proficiency in being able to pass both a written and oral examination. Past President of the ABHRS and accepted member of the IAHRS, Scott Boden, M.D. joins Spencer Kobren in studio to discuss.

Spencer Kobren: Well, you were prepared for me to be completely candid for this interview, as I always am.

Scott Boden, MD: Yeah, go-

Spencer Kobren: You are a board certified ... You are a diplomatic of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. You deserve to be a diplomat. You have a certain skillset and I dedication that I believe that some diplomats do not possess.

Scott Boden, MD: Okay.

Spencer Kobren: So, I think it is at this stage, in my view, not the best advice to blanket and say you know what, these guys need to be a member of the ABHR because there are some doctors who have passed these boards who have a minimal caseload who I don't think ... And I'm speaking for you, I don't think you would lay down for.

Scott Boden, MD: Yeah. No, I think that's fair enough. I guess I would look for that as an important credential. I think in any ... Listen, patient has to do their due diligence, had to meet the doctor hopefully. Ideally, meet the doctor, not meet a sales guy. I mean, that's a different whole other conversation.

Spencer Kobren: It is, but there are ABHR members and there are IHS members who have consultants doing ... It's the nature of the game.

Scott Boden, MD: I think there's a role for a patient educator. Don't get me wrong. It's not how I do things, but I certainly can't despair it for my colleagues.

Spencer Kobren: I prefer how you do things. I prefer how Dan Danyo does things. I would love to be able to create an alliance, an association of everyone who has this like mindset, but that's almost impossible.

Scott Boden, MD: Right.
